DISCOVERING THE LEGACY OF SOUTHWEST SPAIN & MOROCCO IN THE ARIZONA BORDERLANDS
October 2027
This 14-day educational journey explores the rich cultural, ecological, and historical ties between southern Spain and our Southwest. We will trace the deep Roman, Jewish, and, especially, Muslim roots that southern Spain planted in our own borderlands, from the acequia systems still flowing to the horses that became the mustang, from the Moorish architecture of distant arid lands to the foodways of the Sonoran Desert. We will also celebrate Estevanico´s 500 anniversary in his native Azemmour. With scholars from both sides of the Atlantic as our guides, this will be a journey of discovery, critical reflection, and extraordinary sensory richness.
Full details will be offered in September 2026.
In the meantime, for any questions or comments please reach out to Carlos Quintero at cquinteroh@arizona.edu
We will be around these places...
