Sonora Querida, the first adventure in our Southwest Center Travel Series, is fully booked now. We have opened a waiting to fill any slots that may open before October 17th.
To be included in the list, please, send us an email to cquinteroh@arizona.edu with "Sonora Querida Waiting list" in the subject.

This trip will take us deep into the Río Sonora valley, the heartland of Spanish colonial Sonora from the 17th to the 19th centuries. Its communities of Ópata and Eudeve peoples – along with Spaniards and their mestizo and mulato descendants – became the foundations of a frontier society that fused Iberian and Indigenous crops, livestock, irrigation techniques, and foods that in many ways survives today.

Our base of operation will be the lovely La Posada del Rio Sonora in Banamichi. Our guides Bill Steen (author, photographer, and co-founder of the Canelo Project), Tom Sheridan (SWC and School of Anthropology), and Jeff Banister (SWC and School of Geography), will lead us on an exploration and celebration of Sonoran history and culture through lectures, field trips, cooking demonstrations, and iPhone photography sessions. Along the way, they will introduce us to farmers, ranchers, and mescaleros (bacanora makers) who will share their food, music, history, and knowledge of the region.

When: October 17 -21 2022

Cost: $1,600/person ($1,800 in single occupancy)
