Mirza Monterroso

Community Support Specialist

Mirza Monterroso is an archaeologist from Guatemala, where she was involved in the excavations of Mayan sites for several years.  She also worked as a forensic archeologist and an expert witness on dozens of excavations in legal and clandestine burial sites from the Guatemalan genocide, giving her extensive experience in dealing with sensitive and grave matters and working with families of the missing. 
Monterroso worked for eight years as the DNA and Missing Migrant Program Director at the Colibri Center for Human Rights, where her work was not only about identification but also about offering respect to the deceased and their families.  Through her efforts, she helps families navigate the bureaucratic complexities involved in recovering the remains of their loved ones, offering them a measure of peace and dignity in their time of loss. 
As a Community Support Specialist, responsible for establishing and managing partnerships with local and regional government offices, community organizations, ant foreign consulates to expand project outreach, while also conducting forensic data collection from missing persons reports to aid families in their search efforts.
