Mexico's Hidden Gem: A Cultural Journey in San Luis Potosí
November 1 - 8, 2025
Headed by Jennifer Jenkins and Luis Coronado Guel
The Southwest Center’s Travel Series returns after our unforgettable journeys to the Valle del Río Sonora and Álamos. This year, we’re excited to offer something new: a cultural immersion into San Luis Potosí, one of Mexico’s most historically rich and visually striking regions, perfectly timed for the vibrant celebration of Día de Muertos.
Over eight days, we’ll explore sacred deserts, colonial cities, artisanal traditions, and living histories that connect northern Mexico to the American Southwest. From candlelit cemeteries in San Luis to Huichol pilgrimage routes in Real de Catorce and mezcal tastings in the highlands, this trip is designed to foster deep connection, reflection, and learning. Along the way, guests will savor an array of indigenous, colonial, ancient, and contemporary gastronomies, each bite a reflection of the region’s diverse cultural heritage.
And don’t worry, we’ll return to the Río Sonora in Spring 2026, continuing our commitment to celebrating the places and people that define the borderlands.

FAQs
You can easily connect from any U.S. city to daily nonstop flights to San Luis Potosí from Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, and—if convenient—Tijuana. Here are the available options for November 1st:

San Luis Potosí sits at an elevation of approximately 6,115 feet (1,864 meters), and Real de Catorce reaches about 8,950 feet (2,728 meters). While these elevations are higher than many travelers may be used to, the trip does not involve any strenuous physical activity. You can expect mild walks at a relaxed pace, with plenty of opportunities to rest and acclimate. If you have any specific health concerns related to altitude, we recommend consulting with your doctor before travel.
To enter Mexico as a tourist, you’ll need a valid U.S. passport and a Tourist Card (Forma Migratoria Múltiple). While some airlines may provide the immigration form during your flight, this process can be inconsistent. To avoid any confusion or delays, we recommend completing the Tourist Card online before you travel. It's quick and easy to do at: https://www.mexicotouristcard.com/
If you have any questions about the process, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
San Luis Potosí is home to excellent hospitals and medical facilities, so travelers can feel confident knowing quality care is available if needed. However, health coverage while abroad is the responsibility of each traveler. We strongly recommend checking with your U.S. health insurance provider to confirm whether your policy includes international coverage. If not, you may wish to purchase short-term travel insurance that includes medical protection.
Some traditional, reliable providers of travel insurance providers are:
